Rocky Mountain United Methodist Friends, many of you traveled to the site of the Sand Creek
Massacre on June 20, and experienced the powerful presence and sharing of descendants of
survivors of the Massacre. As you know, the Pilgrimage was one step on a long journey of learning
about our history and building healing relationships with Native Americans. Many of you are
asking, what’s next. Where does this journey lead?
1. Public commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Sand Creek Massacre
MARK YOUR CALENDARS. Nov. 29 to Dec. 3, 2014, the Sand Creek Massacre
Spiritual Healing Run will follow the route from the Massacre site to the Colorado State Capital. I
hope a crowd of United Methodists will join my family and me at the beginning and end of the run.
We don’t know all the details at this time. Watch the Commemoration website for details and
related events. Individuals and local churches can support participation of Arapaho and Cheyenne
runners and tribal people by contributing to the Bishops Fund for Native Peoples. Sponsorship for
one runner costs $500 for travel from Montana, Wyoming or Oklahoma, food and lodging. Gifts of
any size are welcome. Click here to donate.
In addition, there may be opportunities for individuals or local churches to help provide lunches or
other support services for the run. If you are interested in attending or providing support services
for the Healing Run, please let me know by sending an email message to
healing@mountainskyumc.org.
2. Intentionally building relationships with Native Peoples in each district.
During the next year each District Superintendent will work with local church leaders to begin
building or strengthening relationships with Native Americans in your area. This work will begin
with relationship building and deep listening. If you are a person with interest in this work, and
ability to make at least a 2-year commitment to on-going conversation, please let us know by
sending an email to healing@mountainskyumc.org.
I plan to continue the Sand Creek Massacre blog into the future with reports from both the
Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain Annual Conference session and news as it unfolds.
